Remembering Those Who Served...

I have always had a hard time saying "Happy" Memorial Day....as in "Happy" Fourth of July, or "Happy" Valentine's Day. For I know throughout the country, there are many families who are mourning the loss of a loved one...and have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

To, me its not just a day off from work - or a day at the beach. I am grateful and heartfelt for the many sould throughout our country's history who have paid the price of freedom. I think on a day to day basis - we forget how blessed we are to love in a country where we are free to live and worship without harm or wrong doing.

With the tears a Land hath shedTheir graves should ever be green.~Thomas Bailey Aldrich
On Memorial Day - we are not Republicans or Democrats, we are not Methodists or Catholics, we are not even Irish-Americans, or African-Americans....(etc)

On thy grave the rain shall fall from the eyes of a mighty nation! ~Thomas William Parsons
We are just Americans.

For love of country they accepted death... ~James A. Garfield
As the wife of someone who served in the Marine Corps for 30 years and two wars...and the mother and mother-in-law of two Army Soldiers who have each served two tours in Iraq...I know how extremely lucky I am that my loved ones have not paid the ultimate sacrifice.

I honor those who have....and pray they find strength and courage to carry on without their loved ones on this earth.

Please never forget the reason we enjoy our freedoms. Thank a servicemember or a Veteran for their service.
On this Memorial Day......I remember.....

  6. Barb,

Thank you so much for this post. I wanted to do a Memorial day post but have struggled deeply with it,in the end deciding not to. I wasn't sure how to approach it without sounding political. You said it all! Everyone (parents, siblings, children) in my family have served in the military including myself. I have one son in Iraq for the fourth time right now, and other children that are on active duty as well. My heart is heavy with worry all the time for my children. Thank you for remembering...I do too.

  9. Oh Barb, this just brings tears to my eyes. So many have suffered and died for all of us and there are not profound enough words to say a proper thank you. I know how grateful you are, and living near an Air Base where they train pilots to fly F-16's, every time they fly over my house I have to stop and say a prayer. I hope everyone does remember to thank our military, and I thank you also as the wife and mother who served right along with them. Much love and thank you. Hugs, Marty

  11. Barb, I attended a beautiful Memorial service here in Southampton today. Our friend's son, a Major , USMC, gave the speech. He and his brother both served in Iraq, and their father served in the Marines in Veit Nam.
I did a tribute on my blog...and when I say Happy Memorial Day, I intend it to mean, remember those who have died, and celebrate those who are still fighting for us..we should never forget!

  13. Barb, you said it so well in your post today. Please thank your husband, son, and daughter-in-law for me. And thank you and the other family members who sacrifice as well. Our son is an Army Ranger and has been deployed several times. So many have sacrificed so much for our freedom. God bless each and everyone of them, and God bless America.
