As I get back into the normality of life… (as if there is such a thing as that here at The Grits’ House) – it dawned on me that I have been taking pleasures in the smaller projects which I have been accomplishing the past few days.
I think that because Christmas was such a grand scale event….that as I wind down from packing the last of the decor and labeling the final few boxes – I am looking at my home as a clean slate where I can start anew.
I did not make resolutions this year, rather I created “goals.”
I know, I know…po-tay-to…po-tah-toe.
But “goals” seems so more doable to me. One of these goals is to get back to my DIY roots. In other words….either I reuse, recycle, reposition…or do without.
I know, I know…po-tay-to…po-tah-toe.
But “goals” seems so more doable to me. One of these goals is to get back to my DIY roots. In other words….either I reuse, recycle, reposition…or do without.
So for this week’s Met Monday….I decided to share a small project in my Living Room, or as I refer to it…my “Morning Room.”
As you can see below…. this small round table next to the plaid chair did not receive any kind of grand treatment for Christmas…
To add to my Staffordshire Dogs, I simply placed a live poinsettia in a Waterford crystal bowl, and added a few silver balls to a vintage cobalt and silver candy dish.
Like I said…..nothing fancy!
After a trip to the grocery store this afternoon, I grabbed a small $6 houseplant – again nothing fancy – but after all the glitz and glamour of Christmas – I felt the need to add some simple, green plants into my home.
So now I present the “After”…my “Five Minute Vignette”…
Not a whole lot changed…..my treasured doggies are still in place. I elevated the back one onto some antique books of various shades of blue.
I pinned on some red and blue fringe onto the plain white shade. I bought this fringe on the clearance rack several months ago, and “one of these days”…
it will be added to the cornice boards I hope to recover.
Look at that cute face….
I purchased these years ago at a flea market at Stoke-on-Trent in England, one of the UK’s largest outdoor flea markets.
I love the crackled glazing on them.
This is a common, everyday houseplant….a Spathiphyllum, or a Peace Lily.
Did you know that a Peace Lily helps purify the air in your home?
A crystal candleholder holds a candle with one of my favorite scents…Clean Cottton.
Again, after the Holidays scents of pine and cinnamon – I long for something clean and pure.
A blue and white teacup makes the perfect holder for a tealight. The new plant was placed inside the Waterford bowl, encircled by some leftover moss as filler.
Just a few tweaks here ….
…and a few tweaks there – and you have the perfect “Five Minute Vignette.”
I will be sharing this vignette, as well as the one atop my English hutch for Tabletop Tuesday. Please come back Monday night to post your vignette or tabletop. McLinky will be up by 9pm. I look forward to seeing all your posts.

Your plant is perfect on that little table. I love the five minute vignette idea too. Sometimes I just fret over things so unnecessarily. 🙂

Beautiful vignette.
Today was the day. We worked yesterday and all day today. But there still are all of those Christmas dishes to be put away.
Maybe then, I’ll have a clean slate and will be able to put your awesome inspiration to use.

My husband was in your neck of the woods twice last week! I think of you and Melissa when we are headed that way! Hope you are staying warm! 🙂 ~hugs, Rhonda

Barb, this is stunning. I may have to get one of my grands to come do the arrangement though. Even with your instructions, I’m sure mine wouldn’t look that pretty. (I love the silver raindeer). I can’t get enough blue and white, so this is perfection in my humble opinion. Thank you so much for hosting this event. laurie
