Creating your own New England Fall...

We had the wonderful pleasure of living in Newport, Rhode Island for a year while my husband attended the Naval War College.  It was one of the most enjoyable tours we had.  We were on the road every weekend, as New England is so easy to travel and destinations can be reached relatively quickly,
in comparison to the South.

(Beautiful hillside in Newport)

One of the most memorable times was the Fall.
The scenery was absolutely breathtaking.

Here in the South, we never really know what kind of Fall season Mother Nature will bless us with.

Some years we get a display of color Sherwin Williams would be envious of... and other years the leaves go from green directly to drab brown.

I enjoy decorating my front porch for the Holidays.  I know you guys have seen it a hundred times, but here is my Front Porch bedecked in its full Autumnal Bliss.

I wanted to share a few ideas I stumbled across ... to give you some ideas for your own porch or patio.  I have two large urns on my porch, so I am always looking for creative uses.

So simple - hydrangeas in black urns with bright orange pumpkins. Simple and classic.

Stacked pumpkin topiaries. I love the height these create at the top of the steps.

Seeing this makes me want to get my window boxes back up, which I usually pack away at the end of Summer when my geraniums have endured as much Summer heat as they can.  Love the Casper pumpkins nestled within the greenery.

I love this whimsical take on the Stacked Pumpkin Topiary.  Any kind of design could be used.  How about carving out your house numbers. How pretty would that be at night.

A very pretty wrought iron planter is the perfect container for pumpkins, berries and greenery.

... and my fave ...

I love combining the leftovers of Summer plantings (such as the tall grasses and the sweet potato plant) with my Fall decor.  I also love to use unexpected plants such as ornamental pepper plants. Look for plants within the garden shop that you would not expect to be included in a standard Fall planter.

Although I do not generally decorate that much for Halloween...I do plan on making one of these wreaths for my Daughter-in-law, Amanda - as she loves Halloween.  Very cute idea!

And I gotta make two of these for the boys.... so creative!
They will love them!

Happy Monday Everyone!..... Blessings, Barb

  6. I'm so envious that you lived in Newport....what a beautiful place. I've always lived in South Texas and have traveled quite a bit but never been anywhere to see the changing leaves.
You sure have some pretty topiary and wreath ideas for fall. I just have to get in the mood while the temperature is still in the mid-90's! :) Happy Fall Ya'll

  8. FUN! It is still so stinking hot here! I'm having a hard time getting inspired. But these pictures of New England are just breathtaking! I for sure want to go there some time. I love your porch! You have made it like an outdoor room. So very welcoming! The lamp kills me! :) Love it!! Our front porch is so tiny... I MIGHT be able to get one topiary on there. :(
    Enjoy your week! :)

  16. Barb..were your urns originally purchased that black color or did you spray paint them yourself? If so, can you share what you used? I've been thinking of spray painting mine, so I can get them all one color and even though their exterior design is not the same, at least all one color, they would look more unified. You've given me some ideas to spruce up the front of the house for the Fall. Do you have a candle inside those stacked pumpkins or some type of light? Love the pumpkin that wrapped in cheesecloth or gauze with the eyes showing. Clever!
