“Welcome to Farmhouse Friday“
This week, I thought it would be fun to tour of one of my
favorite farmhouses and one of my favorite blogs –
Town and Country Living with my good friend, Jennifer.
I know you will love it and it will become one of your fave blogs, too.
Long before I ever owned my own home, I had an attraction to
architecture and decorating. Older architecture and recycled
furnishings in particular. I’m not a huge fan of highly valuable
antiques because they feel like something that should be revered
in a museum. I’m more of a casual, down-home girl who appreciates
vintage pieces that show a little wear and tear … perfect for the
farmhouse style that I love. Let’s start with my favorite room … the kitchen!
My home is my refuge from the world, and I like it light and airy
to lift my spirits. I fell in love with the built-in hutch in the corner,
which stores a lot of stuff! Instead of upper cabinets, we decided to
add open shelving in the kitchen to enhance a farmhouse feel.
Hubby installed bead board throughout the kitchen and we used white
cabinet paint on it, which is more durable and resists stains and dirt,
making it easier to clean. The bead board cupboard used to be on the
wall but we kept hitting our heads on it, so we moved it to the floor
… perfect spot for the microwave!
The trio of windows over the sink is another part of my farmhouse
kitchen that I love. The ledge holds pretty flowers or vintage bottles
throughout the year, and I can see outside while I do the dishes
(we have no dishwasher!).
Do you see the rooster pillow on the love seat in my living room?
It was a Christmas present from Barb a couple years ago!
I get a lot of compliments on it. You can buy your very own
burlap rooster pillow from her online store!
My home was built circa 1875 and it has all these great windows in it!
It also has the wide baseboards and trim that you don’t typically see
in newer construction. Painted floors are part of my farmhouse style.
Over the years I’ve learned it’s best to let a room “speak” to me before
I decorate it. My dining room has had several different colors of
wall paint … yellow, sage, even pink! I couldn’t get the look right
because I wasn’t listening to it. Finally my gut told me to go with a cool,
light color and it now wears Steamed White by Laura Ashley
(you can find it at Lowes).
There’s that pillow again! It echoes the landscape burlap I used for
my curtain swags, which are draped over branches I picked up from
the yard. We have several Silver Maples in the yard that are soft,
wood trees, so branches come down in strong winds.
Part of what makes a house a home is infusing your personal style
into each and every room. The easiest way to do this is to collect
and display things you love … like my collection of white ironstone
seen here in my kitchen.
Nothing says farmhouse style like good old white ironstone!
Durable and simple in style.
I also love vintage mirrors and bottles, seen here in the family
room during the Christmas season. The mirrors help to bounce light
around the room, which helps create the light and airy style that I love.
Here’s our downstairs bathroom that showcases one of our painted
claw foot tubs! The upstairs claw foot tub has a shower attachment
on it and some day I’ll share that room on my blog.
Thanks again, Barb, for letting me share a bit of my home with
your readers.
