This post took a 180 degree turn just hours
before it was written.
(A woman who changed her mind?
Who has ever heard such a thing?) 🙂
Who has ever heard such a thing?) 🙂
I was going to write about how The Hubbs doesn’t like our current Living Room coffee table…
He thinks its too rusty and worn-looking and “shabby” for the space.
(Yes, he said “shabby.” He’s so designer hip!) 😀
Granted, it has it’s “character.”
But, I love that about it. I love that in a space with English antiques and French linen pillows…
– it adds a touch of “shabby.” 🙂
– it adds a touch of “shabby.” 🙂
So… how did this blog post go from a discussion about a rusty coffee table to something else entirely?
A friend asked me last night “What did you do over the weekend?”
I replied with a simple…”Oh, nothing much. This and that.” And the conversation moved on.
And later…. after I gave that “nothing much” comment some more thought, I realized that was so far from the truth.
While we didn’t do go anywhere special or see any great sights, what we did was spend time together.
For starters, my sweet niece, who is homeschooled, was promoted to the 11th grade on Friday night during an end-of-year ceremony.
But, it was very moving because she won’t be living here with us next year. She will be attending the Gelsey-Kirkland Academy of Classical Ballet in NYC.
That is definitely not just “nothing.”
I also started a complete design remodel of my sweet grandson’s room. Sharks! Sharks! and more Sharks! It has been in the planning stage for over a month. On Saturday, I was able to unload the room in its entirety (not a small feat!) – paint all the trim, doors, baseboards…and the first coat of wall paint.
Nope. THAT was not “nothing” either.
And yesterday, we all met at my Aunt’s house to celebrate the opening of her pool.
Mom and Dad, my sister and her family and my brother and his family, and best of all my hubby and son and daughter-in-law and three grandloves.
We swam and swam and swam.
Or, “fwam and fwam” as Roo says. 🙂
And grilled and grilled and grilled. And eat and eat and eat. Like any good Southern family does.
Most of all, this past weekend was about family.
Being with the ones that truly matter.
Creating memories that last and stay with you forever.
So instead of saying “nothing really“… I should have said…
“We did something. Something very special.”
We laughed. We loved. We lived.
We enjoyed being a family and doing simple things.
That is something, indeed.
That is everything.
For the record, me and the hubbs are still disagreeing on the Living table. 🙂
What did you do this past weekend?
Hoping yours was just as special!

It sounds like a great weekend to me, Barb! I always enjoy those weekends that include spending time with my family. I feel like your living room coffee table could be describing me at 49 ~ a little bit rusty, a little bit shabby, maybe a bit tired looking, but still looking pretty good! : )

We did family things as well. My son and his beautiful new wife Married for 3 weeks are in the process of making the home they just bought into a home. We are all the Mr and I, plus my other son and the newly weds working on things…. The Mr and I are painting and distressing the dining room chairs and that’s what our weekend was spent doing. That and eating!!! yes, eating is a must for Southern families .

So true about weekends spent enjoying family and friends… it doesn’t have be an event to be special.
Congrats to your niece! I just watched a documentary on Netflix called “first position” about young ballet dancers trying to make it – very inspiring. Making it to a ballet academy in NYC is a huge deal.

I love this post, Barb. Sometimes it seems like we accomplish very little but are working so hard! Tim and I are working on our bathroom renovation and it seems like it takes days to do one little project, but slowly, slowly, it’s coming together! And then there’s vacation and homeschooling and church and on and on. (Your pics are great, too!)

We had family time too! On Sat. we went to Longwood Gardens with our daughter and SIL, then out to a wonderful dinner. On Sunday our daughter came over and we went to our community pool. GREAT weekend. Family times are the BEST, I agree. BTW, I have a VERY similiar birdcage. Love your vignette. XO, pinky

The pics of your lovely vignette and coffee table (yes!) add the “background music” to your poignant words about what is truly “something” in our everyday lives!
